Externship Program

Externship Program – launching spring break 2026

We are pleased to announce the launch of the UH School of Architecture Externship Program, a new opportunity designed to introduce students to real-world professional practice in architecture, landscape architecture, and allied fields.

What Is an Externship?

The externship is a one-week, unpaid, immersive professional experience hosted within a professional firm. It is open to all undergraduate and graduate students and will take place during Spring Break: March 16–20, 2026.

Externships are intentionally flexible and hands-on. While each experience will vary by firm, students may:

  • Shadow professionals and observe day-to-day office operations
  • Assist with research, documentation, or design-related tasks
  • Observe client, consultant, or city planning meetings
  • Participate in site or construction visits
  • Complete short, structured exercises provided by the host firm

Students may be placed individually or alongside another student, which supports peer learning and helps ease the transition into a professional office environment.

Why Participate?

The externship is designed to help students:

  • Gain exposure to a wide range of architecture, landscape architecture, construction management, development, and allied practices
  • Understand professional workflows, protocols, and workplace culture
  • Build and expand professional networks
  • Experience different firm types, scales, and areas of practice
  • Explore potential career paths early and with minimal time commitment

What to Expect

Externship schedules and hours may vary depending on the host firm’s capacity and current projects. Students should expect an in-person, professional setting and are encouraged to approach the experience with curiosity, initiative, and professionalism.
