Waipahu Station

Anticipating development pressure and accessibility challenges from a new heavy rail transit stop in Waipahu, Melise Nekoba’s project examines the potential for the Waipahu Station area to be better organized for a contemporary, dynamic and comfortable human pedestrian experience. Centered on the rail station, all previously underutilized vehicle-dominated space is transformed to better serve the human-scale. Reframed around a new community hub, the district threads existing social and cultural features together with previously hidden ecological patterns to help promote social exchange as well as urban cooling and better environmental performance.
