Introduction And General InformationThe number of School of Architecture Research Travel Scholarships varies from year to year depending on the donors, some of whom do not offer their awards on a yearly basis. The scholarships allow students to study at exchange institutions overseas or to undertake a variety of scholarly activities generally during the summer of 2006. These scholarly activities include:  | Participation in an ArchD practicum abroad;
|  | Study at an exchange university in Asia, or elsewhere;
|  | Study the built work of a particular architect;
|  | Study the architecture of a particular building type;
|  | Study the architecture of a particular region;
|  | Study a specific topic related to architecture or construction;
| | Conduct research in preparation for the ArchD graduation project; and,
|  | Other approved research activities. |
Applications for the Allen R. Johnson / Roy C. Kelley Architectural Research travel Scholarship and the George J. Wimberly Architectural Research Travel Scholarship and Internship is limited as noted later in this document. All other scholarships are open to all students who will have completed the minimum studio coursework requirement of ARCH 202 by the start of Fall Semester 2005 and are in good academic standing. Students must make specific application for all scholarships. Students are encouraged to apply for multiple scholarships and may utilize a single application for this purpose; an application for multiple scholarships should clearly state the student’s intentions and scholarship priorities.
The initial screening of scholarship applications will be based primarily on the quality of the written proposals and an applicant’s academic history and later by an interview with the selection committee. It is therefore of utmost importance that interested applicants communicate their goals, rationale and specific plans as clearly and thoroughly as possible. The qualifications, motivation and seriousness of an applicant must be amply demonstrated by the submission of a thoughtful, competent and well-written proposal.
Past scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply as long as they satisfy the published application requirements, however, if any two proposals of equal merit are under consideration, it is likely that award priority will be given to the applicant without previous substantial travel experience or opportunity. Multiple applications for different scholarships in different categories are encouraged, however, except under extraordinary circumstances, no applicant will be awarded more than one travel scholarship in any given year.
Other than indicated elsewhere in this document scholarship recipients are generally expected to complete all travel and study activities during the year of year of award, returning to the School of Architecture for studies during the academic year that begins in the fall semester of that same year.
Johnson / Kelley Architectural Research Travel ScholarshipsThe Allen R. Johnson / Roy C. Kelley Architectural Research travel Scholarship is the School of Architecture flagship scholarship; it was set up in 1982 following a substantial gift to the School and the formation of an endowment to support the scholarship by the Honolulu architects named in the award. As this is the most prestigious of all school scholarships, candidates for this award are expected to be among the very best students in the School. Eligibility is by invitation only and is limited to students with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 at the time of application in either architecture classes or all university coursework. Scholarship applicants are required to have successfully completed ARCH 202 prior to application for this scholarship.
The purpose of the award is to encourage and assist students to conduct research off-shore and who are expected to ”really get something out of the experience”. The donors expressed a wish to see students enrich their understanding and appreciation of architecture through scholarly research and travel and that priority be given to students who have previously had only limited opportunities for travel. Research topics may deal with any aspect of architecture that a student wishes to study and the range of topics has purposely been left open to enable students to pursue research in areas of interest to them and to encourage maximum flexibility and creativity in developing a research proposal.
Selection will be based on the quality of the proposals and expected student benefit and scholarships will be awarded to individuals who will be expected to return to Hawaii and the university with the potential of informing and exiting their peers through the sharing of their travel and research experiences.
UHSAAA ScholarshipsThe University of Hawaii School of Architecture Alumni Association holds an annual golf tournament with the proceeds utilized for the UHSAAA Scholarship that offers financial support to a fulltime student.
Student Exchange SholarshipsThe number of Student Exchange Scholarships varies from year to year depending on school funding and the availability of places at the exchange institutions. The School of Architecture presently has exchange student agreements with the National University of Singapore and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. The program has been set up to support our relationship with the Asia/Pacific region and to allow student exchanges between the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and universities in the region. The School hopes to add additional universities to this program in the near future. Applicants are expected to have a record of academic achievement. Applicants should exhibit a seriousness of purpose, willingness and eagerness to learn, and an adequate background to contribute to the academic life of the exchange university. Applicants also must be flexible enough to adapt to living and working in a new environment in a foreign country. Selection will be based primarily on an evaluation of the applicant’s academic record and performance, and state professional goals. Student Exchange Scholarships are open to all students in the School who satisfy the following scholarship criteria: | Successful completion of ARCH 202 prior to scholarship application
| | Grade point average not less than 2.75, and,
| | An agreement by the successful student to return for architectural studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Architecture after leaving the exchange institution. |
.Research Travel ScholarshipsThe purpose of the School of Architecture Research travel Scholarships is to encourage students to conduct study and research away from Hawaii and to investigate specific topics or engage in other worthwhile professional and scholarly activities that will enrich their experience and enhance their education. The donors have expressed a desire to see students expand their knowledge and understanding of architecture, design, urban planning, urban sociology, construction technology, and related disciplines, and of the world generally, through meaningful travel experiences.
Student Intern/travel ScholarshipsThe purpose of School of Architecture Intern/Travel Scholarships is to place a highly motivated, skilled and talented student in a prestigious architectural office in California or the Asia Pacific region during one summer and to provide funds for sustenance at the beginning of the internship and for travel to the off-shore location. The purpose of the program is to support students who wish to travel to a new environment and gain valuable professional experience by working with talented architects in an important architectural firm.
The compensation that any student intern receives is subject to negotiation between the student and the architectural office where they work and is usually similar to the prevailing rate for students with similar backgrounds in that location. In the case of foreign countries, with varying foreign exchange rates, the rate of pay may vary substantially from what may be expected in Hawaii. The duration of employment may vary from eight to twelve weeks. Student interns are responsible for arranging their own accommodation, transportation and all on site costs. The award amount is usually approximately the cost of a economy airline ticket plus a small scholarship stipend. In addition to completing the internship, participating students are highly encouraged to also travel in the area that they visit. Preference will be given to students who will have successfully completed ARCH 302 at the time of application.
George J. Wimberly Architectural Research Travel Scholarship And InternshipThe purpose of the George J. Wimberly Architectural Research Travel Scholarship and Internship is to place a highly motivated, skilled and talented graduating student in the prestigious Honolulu architectural office of Wimberly Allison Tong and Goo (WAT&G) for one year following graduation. Students entering their last year of architectural studies and who expect to graduate no later than August of that year are eligible to apply.
Upon award of the scholarship, the student will also be offered the opportunity of part time employment at WAT&G during their last semester of study.
Student applicants should have excellent design skills and advanced technical competence commensurate with their experiences, show evidence of critical thinking, and have an interest in architectural and urban place-making. The award also offers the successful applicant a travel scholarship of $4,000 with requirements for the completion of a scholarly component in the student’s area of interest and for a public presentation after research and travel has been completed.
