Aloha!ALOHA!
I am pleased to be the new dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Hawai’i at Mănoa. I look forward to a challenging and exciting future. I was asked to share some initial thoughts after my first week:
PEOPLE / PLACE
Value, respect, and protect Hawai’i and its peoples. Integrate our place/people into teaching, learning, research and service.
INTERNATIONAL / GLOBAL
Value and respect cultural diversity and position the School to lead in a global marketplace.
CONNECTIONS
Build strong connections with the University/Community/Profession/State/Region and Asia/Pacific.
RESOURCES
Use resources wisely/invest in quality/entrepreneurial programs/partner with the private/public sectors/financial support from the alumni, profession, and industry
VALUE / RESPECT
Promote and provide value and respect for members of our unified profession….students / faculty / staff / alumni / interns / architects and colleagues.
PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
Provide expanded opportunities to study within the design/construction fields. Consideration of accredited degrees in Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Construction Management and alternative paths leading to the Doctor of Architecture and the Architecture Doctorate. Become a global leader in the delivery of professional education.
SERVICE
The School should strive to serve the profession, university, State of Hawai’i and society through the development of a Community Design Center and a Design/Build Program.
RESEARCH/CREATIVY
Partner with industry, work interdisciplinary and creatively to create new knowledge through funded opportunities.
DESIGN
Design is the essence and future of our profession and will be the foundation on which we build.
RISK
Risk is essential to success. The School, and all associated with it, must be willing to assume risks and strive for excellence.
SUCCESS / FAILURE
If risks are taken, “lack of success” will not be viewed as a failure. We will learn from our experiences and embark on other uncharted journeys to succeed at the highest level.
TIME
“They say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” Andy Warhol
“Time and tide wait for no man. A pompous and self-satisfied proverb, and was true for a billion years; but in our day of electric wires and water-ballast we turn it around: Man waits not for time, nor tide.” Mark Twain
WORK
“Work is either fun or drudgery. It depends on your attitude. I like fun.” Colleen C. Barrett
Mahalo and thank you for letting me join your community!
