Fisrst International Symposium on Asia Pacific Architecture


East - West Encounter

This First International Symposium on Asia Pacific Architecture is a multi-disciplinary event that will discuss the impact and implications of culture on architecture in the Asia Pacific Region. It will explore the social. political. anthropological, historical. climatic and economic factors which have influenced architecture in the region. The symposium will provide a forum for scholars, businessmen, policy makers and professional practitioners to discuss areas of mutual concern. The purpose of this dialogue is to help formulate practices and policies which are in tune with the current ideologies while producing contextually and culturally sensitive architecture in the Asia Pacific region.

This symposium will include topics on:

• Historical perspective of the cultural base of architecture;

• The effect of eastern and western cultures on the development of architecture in the Asia Pacific region;

• The present cultural and ideological context of Asia Pacific architecture;

• Planning goals and policies for the design of cultural and contextually sensitive architectural environments in the region.

• The practical aspects of the practice of architecture in the Asia Pacific region.

These topics will be covered through presentations by internationally known individuals, the reading of scholarly papers and group discussions at selected topic sessions.

 

Asia Pacific Culture and Architecture Design Award Program

An integral part of the Symposium program will be the jurying of the Kenneth F. Brown Asia Pacific Culture and Architecture Design Awards Program which will recognize architectural designs in the region that exemplify an understanding of the culture and demonstrate an exceptional level of sensitivity in the physical environment.

Architecture works will be judged on how well they fit and contribute to the physical, historical, and cultural context of their locations. Eligibility is open to any built architectural work completed between January1, 1970 and January 1, 1994 and located either on the continent of Asia or in any country which touches the Pacific Ocean.

The architect or architects whose project is selected by the jury will be awarded the Kenneth F. Brown Architecture Design Award, a cash prize of $25,000 (U.S.). The distinguished panel of jurors consists of architects Kenneth F. Brown of Hawaii. Charles Mark Correa of India, Ashley De Vos of Sri Lanka and Fumihiko Maki of Japan.

Judging and announcement of winners will take place during the symposium.

Cost: $300 US prior to February 24, 1995, thereafter, $350 US. One day registration is $125 US.

Some events will require an additional fee. A two-day post-symposium tour to the Big Island of Hawaii will be available for symposium attendants.
