Thanks to the support of the Raymond and Hsiao Yen Research Fellowship, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa School of Architecture student Martin Anzellini will travel to the Philippines this June to pursue fieldwork at the intersection of architecture, community design, and sustainability.
Anzellini will collaborate with local organizations that specialize in bamboo construction and social housing, gaining first hand insight into resilient and affordable building practices. His research will also include documentation of vernacular architecture and organic—often informal—settlements that reflect the lived experiences of marginalized communities in tropical contexts.
This fieldwork offers a valuable opportunity to explore habitable systems that are deeply rooted in place and social need. The Raymond and Hsiao Yen Research Fellowship supports students conducting innovative research that bridges academic inquiry and real-world application, especially in the Pacific region.
