For over a decade, Professor Martin Despang has led critical public conversations about Honolulu’s built environment through his weekly ThinkTech Hawaiʻi series, Human(e) Architecture. With 355 episodes and more than 21,500 YouTube views, the show has become a unique platform for exploring the intersection of local architecture and global context.
Co-hosted for many years by Bishop Museum historian DeSoto Brown, the program has featured in-depth dialogue on design, culture, and sustainability. Despite the recent closure of ThinkTech Hawaiʻi’s downtown studio in spring 2024—ending over 30 programs across genres—Human(e) Architecture remains one of the few continuing shows, now produced independently by ThinkTech founder Jay Fidell from his Nuʻuanu home studio.
Alongside Despang’s ongoing series, DeSoto Brown has launched a new show, How Did We Get Here?, expanding the platform’s commitment to free, independent discourse in Hawaiʻi. Together, these efforts highlight the enduring value of public scholarship and the built environment’s role in shaping our shared future.
