Hawaiʻi ASLA 2021 Student Merit and Honor Awards

Please join us in congratulating Jonathan ‘Malu’ Stanich, MLA ‘21 and Matthew Mitsuaki Higa, MLA ‘21 for receiving capstone achievement awards presented by the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The awardees were selected by a distinguished jury of local landscape architects. Malu received this year’s Hawaiʻi ASLA Student Merit Award for his innovative project “Nupaikini—Towards a New Hawaiian Design.” Matt’s capstone research entitled “Loʻi Wai and Kuauna: Rejuvenating Biocultural Infrastructure” earned him the 2021 Hawaiʻi ASLA Student Honor Award.

Hawaiʻi ASLA’s Annual Graduating Student Honor & Merit Award Program recognizes academic achievement, design competence, and communication skills. The judging criteria include excellence in research, analysis/planning effort, design innovation, impact on community, ecology, and significance to Hawaiʻi’s cultural and environmental context.

In addition to certificates, Hawaiʻi ASLA provides monetary awards and free one-year Associate Memberships in ASLA to each Malu and Matt.

Our gratitude goes to ASLA and its members for supporting our students in this and many other ways!
