At a reception honoring candidates for degrees of Doctor of Architecture (DArch) and Bachelor of Environmental Design (BEnvD), on Friday, May 10, 2019, three doctoral graduates received awards for excellence in architectural design research that advances disciplinary knowledge.

Chunyu Wang: “Rental Community Study Based on Internet Sharing Economy”
In the sharing economy era, this research discusses physical space and extends the architectural category to social relationships in an online virtual world.
Wang “appreciates all the professors that guided my research, especially Professor Clark Llewellyn who introduced me to this fabulous school via the Global Track Dual Degree program.”

Christopher Songvilay: “Framework and Design Process for Affordable Housing in Urban Honolulu. Case Study: Kalihi”
A research project providing a design solution for Hawai‘i’s need for affordable housing; district of Kalihi as the selected site.
“I’m thankful for the support and push from my DArch committee, mentors, family and friends. A big takeaway from the experience personally and professionally is that solutions to home are never an individual effort but inherently born in collaboration and empathy over time,” said Songvilay.

An architectural research/design project proposing hybrid, tensile fabric homes as an affordable and sustainable option for families in Hawai’i.
“My DArch experience was an incredible journey shaped by faculty and design experts at the university, community professionals, and friends and family within the context of Hawai’i as our home, as inspiration, and as a source of values,” expressed Moorman.
